Do you ever find yourself struggling to believe God’s truth
about yourself? Is it more comfortable to live in insecurity and doubt than to
step out in faith and trust Jesus’ love? So many times, I get caught up in listening
to what my fears are whispering and turn my heart away from the truth I’ve
found in Jesus.
My small group did an activity earlier in the week where we
wrote down lies about ourselves that we found difficult to defeat or shake off.
You could almost feel the atmosphere around our little couches and chairs
become discouraged as each girl bent her head and began to write and write and write.
We fall for so many lies.
“I’m not a strong leader.”
“People don’t value my friendship.”
“I’ll never be enough...”
One by one, each of the girls in our circle read out loud a
lie she had written. But, instead of simply reading it, our small group leaders
had us use the phrase “is a lie” after each comment.
“My future doesn’t matter to God
is a lie.”
“I don’t deserve love
is a lie.”
“I’ll never be
enough…is a lie.”
After we shared our thoughts, we turned to the Word for
Truth. You see, Satan is the father of lies. Deception is his native language –
it’s something he’s comfortable in and convincing at. In light of that, how do
we even begin to shake off the falseness we are surrounded by?
We turn to the Light and allow it to cast out the darkness.
We stumble towards the Truth and memorize it, study it, know it well.
Ephesians 1:7-10 says “In him we have redemption through his
blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the
mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as
a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven
and things on earth.” [ESV]
He’s freely given us redemption, forgiveness, grace, a
purpose, and an inheritance. With Christ as our identity, we are enough.
He thinks we are worth the greatest love (John 3:16). He holds our futures in His hands and
has purposed them to accomplish much for His glory (Jer. 29:11). We can lead
confidently in His strength knowing He has gifted us (1 Cor. 12:4-7). If God is
for us, who can be against us (Rom. 8:31-39)? He is so, so near to the
broken-hearted (Ps. 34:17-18) and He is a good
Father (Ps. 103:1-19).
Dear friends, if you have chosen to hide your life in
Christ’s, you’ve been rescued from the dominion of darkness and won’t ever be
forsaken by the Light.
Now, that’s what I call truth.
Little LK Bio: Hi! My name is Laura Kate Genevish (LK for
short), and I’m a senior studying English at Christopher Newport University. In
the not-too-distant future, I’ll be working towards a Master’s in Elementary
Education, but this year, I’m enjoying co-leading CNU’s Cru movement. You can
usually spot me wearing a cat shirt, making guacamole, jamming to the newest
One Direction hit, or training for my next half-marathon.
